Northcote itself is vibrant without trying too hard — proper bars, good cafés, and a cinema down at Westgarth Village if you’re after a night out that doesn’t require a tram into the city. Being able to walk to the Peacock Pub in under 3 minutes is the kind of local detail that makes a stay here feel less like visiting and more like actually living there for a while — and the CBD view with your morning coffee is the sort of thing people genuinely miss once they leave. • Wesley Anne — a relaxed High Street bar with a genuinely good atmosphere, better than most for a low-key evening.
• Il Melograno — the local gelato stop, and one of the best in Melbourne if you ask around.
• Patricia’s Bakehouse — good coffee without the fuss, and one of the better-value flat whites on the strip.
• Northcote Social Club — live music and a proper night out if that’s what you’re after.
