The Location (Without the Spin)

You’re technically in Southbank, but honestly you’re closer to South Melbourne — which works in your favour. The Convention & Exhibition Centre is across the road if that’s why you’re here, and Crown and the Southbank Promenade are an easy stroll for the touristy stuff. But the better find is on your doorstep: South Melbourne Market is walkable, and so is Clarendon Street, with Bay Street in Port Melbourne not far beyond it. Flinders Street Station is an easy stroll, and trams stop right at your door — travel within the free tram zone won’t cost you a thing.

Where to Eat (We’ve Actually Been)

• South Melbourne Market — the obvious starting point, and still the best. Grab the famous dim sims or graze the food stalls for lunch.
• Commune Wine, Southgate Ave — unpretentious, a punchy little menu, and unmatched skyline views. Perch on the front balcony for a pre-show glass.
• Yarra Botanica, Southbank Promenade — floating on the river with fresh, mostly local produce. Great for grazing and group dinners.
• Miss Pearl Bar + Dining, Southbank Blvd — modern Asian right by the theatre, with a decision-free pre-theatre banquet if you’re catching a show.
• Left Bank, Southbank Blvd — dinner and drinks in one, with a midweek three-course deal and a Sunday bottomless brunch worth building a morning around.
